Increase your Twitter fan following

First off, I should mention that I am not an authority on Twitter. In fact, I haven’t been very active on it. The reason I write this article is that I have been paying a good attention to twitter lately, and because my followers count has just touched 2000 a few while back (not much I know but enough for someone like me who’s never been a social networking junkie). The following few tips will help you increase your twitter followers just as they have helped me.

Pep up your twitter page. First and foremost, fill out your Bio, pick a theme, select a display image. Your page should not give a negative feeling of stagnancy. Curious souls like to know more about others, they will want to know who you are, what you do and where your interests lie. Your Bio is the only place where they can find more about you. It’ll help you associate with other twitter users having similar interests.Your bio also appears on Twitter’s Suggested Users page. Search engines like Google and Bing are experimenting with the way tweets could be displayed in search results. Your Bio will serve as description for search engines. The good side of having your twitter details filled up is that you’ll most likely attract like minded people having similar interests as yours. Its’ all about social networking & connecting!

Nurture your Twitter page like your Website or Blog The idea is to get more and more traffic to your twitter page so users may find you and add you. Link it up everywhere you’re active on web. Link to your profile in emails you send, use it in forum signatures, on Facebook, LinkedIn, Orkut & everywhere else you are present. Spread the word, let others know you’re there on Twitter as well. It is always a good idea to allot a little space giving people an option to add you on twitter.

Be Active on Twitter. If you are willing to build a long following list, you have got to work hard towards it. Stagnancy is not appreciated anywhere. Get out of your inactivity shell and tweet, tweet, tweet! Other twitterers will follow & keep following you if they found you active on twitter.

It doesn’t mean you start pushing hundreds of thousands of tweets a day. Just try to remain active, tweet about whatever you feel, just ensure that is of some worth to other twitter users or at least the ones you’re willing to get in touch (your targeted audience). Tweet daily so that your twitter page keeps updating and your tweets may find a place in twitter’s public timeline and twitter search along with search engines.

Give people a reason to follow you. Why should others follow you? Because they will gain something of value by following you. Provide worth, give others a good sound reason to follow you. It could be giving out a gift, incentive for following you or simply a reason that you’ll follow them back (I know that happens a lot). See here why people auto follow on twitter.

You follow me and I follow back so both can benefit. Isn’t it a good deal, huh? Needless to mention that this is the most easy way to increase your count. Spend some time following other each day. You could start with following 80-100 people each day or the most twitter allows for the day for a month. I am sure you’ll be surprised to see how many followers you accumulate at the end of the month.

Keep a watch on Trending topics Twitter lists current trending topics in its front page in the form of hash tags. Pay attention to what top twitter users are tweeting. Write useful quality content and people will want to connect with you. Watch out for active trends. The Trending topics list on twitter page will give an idea of what is popular, what others are tweeting about. Jump in and tweet about the trend.

Find people who follow back
There are twitter users who automatically follow you back when you follow them. Some folks have been compiling lists of twitter users who follow back. Find them, add them & get a follow back. Be advised the lists might be outdated, inaccurate and the people listed could have stopped auto following others because of twitter spam accounts. Still, you can always unfollow those who do not follow you back if you wish.

Search follow back, follow, follow me and related words in http://search.twitter.com and you will find many people who will generously follow back if you follow them.

Follow the followers of popular twitterers
It is one of the effective ways to build up your followers list fast. The most common way is to find and add people with the same interests as you on Twitter, is to find a popular Twitterer under your topic, say or ‘techcrunch’ or ‘real estate’ or ‘search engine optimization’ or ‘your domain of work’ etc.for people like yourself, and add people that follow these known users or communities.
